Oman's government-owned Minerals Development Oman (MDO) has announced plans to develop a huge solar salt project at Mahout in Al Wusta Governorate, a report said.

The company has sought approvals for a concession covering an area of 122 sq km, the Oman Daily Observer report said.

The giant solar salt scheme will harness the governorate’s natural sea-salt generating potential for various oilfield, petrochemical and industrial applications, it said.

Speaking at the OER Business Summit in Muscat, Fahad al Adi, head of corporate support at MDO, said the project has the potential to open up opportunities for downstream investments in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Duqm.

A partner in the Mahout Solar Salt project is Shomookh Mining Industries Company, which is already developing a major mineral processing cluster at Duqm SEZ.
