80 year old UAE resident Ghadeer Ahmed Sabayah Al Madhani had a miraculous survival after a rotablator angioplasty done by Dr. Fekry El Deeb, Specialist Cardiology at Zulekha Hospital Dubai. Mr. Madhani had multiple risk factors with a coronary artery disease including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and a chronic kidney disease. He had a extended history of ischemic heart disease and had undergone a coronary bypass surgery 10 years ago. He had been complaining of chest pain on and off since last October, which was treated in Oman medically.

He was admitted in Fujairah hospital with acute myocardial infarction and was relatively unstable. The family was looking for a hospital to accept his high-risk condition and treat him with the coronary angiography. Considering the risk involved due to his age, unstable condition, along with the need for dialysis, many hospitals in other emirates could not admit him for treatment.

Dr. Fekry El Deeb, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiology accepted him at Zulekha Hospital Dubai, evaluated his condition, stabilized him and prepared him for a coronary angiography. This angiography revealed significant narrowing of the left main coronary artery, the left anterior descending artery, the first septal perforator artery with more than 95% critical narrowing with heavy calcifications which increase the risk for complications and required immediate intervention. The patient was analyzed after the diagnosis and prepared well for his intervention procedure two days later.

Dr. Fekry El Deeb remarks, “We are extremely happy we could help this gentleman at a very critical stage. We carried out a specific technique called rotablator angioplasty, a procedure we do when the arteries are heavily calcified. This is done using a drill with diamond chips that ablate the calcium in the arteries while it makes around 150-200 rotations per minute. It is a specialized technique, which very few hospitals specialize in and facilitate. The procedure makes the opening of the arteries easier. The left main coronary artery, left anterior descending artery and the first septal perforator were all widely opened and the blood flow restored to normal.”

Speaking of her father’s condition Ms. Asma, daughter of Mr. Madhani, said, “I am happy to see my father talk and move around. He is much more comfortable now than before. After multiple visits to other hospitals, we could get him treated urgently. We are extremely grateful to the support and treatment given to my father from the medical team at Zulekha Hospital Dubai.”

Mr. Madhani has also undergone a dialysis recession after the procedure, eventually recovered and is now symptom free. He has started moving around the next day and was discharged within two days of hospital stay. He will continue his follow up with Dr. El Deeb and resume his normal life.
