A whole building at the Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) has undergone extensive cleaning procedures after an employee of global press relations agency Edelman was found positive for coronavirus.

Edelman, which has offices at ONE JLT, confirmed on Wednesday that an employee had contracted the virus after returning from an overseas trip.

According to the Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre (DMCC), the developer of the office tower, some precautionary measures have been implemented in the free zone following the incident, including bio-testing of surfaces and detailed cleaning and sanitisation.

The DMCC free zone operates several buildings with commercial spaces occupied by thousands of companies, ranging from multinational corporations to start-ups. The affected building is a 14-storey tower within the JLT community.

According to Edelman, it had closed the office in Dubai, as well as in Abu Dhabi as a precautionary measure. The staff that was found positive for the virus had reportedly travelled from Europe.

Another Dubai-based employee at the HSBC office was also positive for coronavirus, according to reports this weekend. The worker is assigned in the bank’s global banking division and some of the colleagues have been sent home.

Precautionary measures

The coronavirus case at JLT prompted DMCC to carry out a “range of precautionary measures” not just within the affected tower.

“DMCC has implemented a range of precautionary measures and implemented sanitation and hygiene standards across the community in alignment with the protocol and guidance issued by the Dubai Health Authority and UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention,” a spokesperson told Zawya.

The free zone also carried out a screening of facilities maintenance staff.

“As for ONE JLT, the building has undergone a thorough sanitisation process per federal protocol including all common areas. The office in question is closed and its employees are now working remotely,” DMCC said.

The UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) confirmed on Saturday a new coronavirus case, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 86. The health ministry assured that all those who were in contact with the patient have all tested negative for the virus after undergoing some tests.
