Partnership with leading regional arts event demonstrates commitment to youth and education with photography workshops, promotions and a scholarship for Emirati animation filmmaker

Dubai: Canon Middle East, a leader in imaging and printing solutions, has underlined its commitment to youth and education through its support to the 7th Sharjah International Film Festival (SIFF) for Youth and Children this year. Canon’s support included helping to achieve a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD™ record for the ‘Largest Photography Lesson’ using 400 Canon DSLR cameras.

The scholarship was awarded to the winner of the ‘Children and Youth Filmmaking’ category, Hind Abdullah Al Mail, for her no dialogue animation entitled ‘Go On’. Hind is a seventeen-year-old Emirati student, passionate about making animation films.  She will be supported by Canon with a one-year mentorship programme to further enhance her filmmaking skills as well as 30,000AED worth of Canon equipment.

During the festival days, Canon storytellers delivered daily Canon Academy workshops – morning sessions for children and evening classes for the more enthused photography students. A number of promotions were also run, with daily competitions for Canon Zoemini instant cameras and two being won each day. A photo station was set up to create lasting memories for visitors who could print out their pictures on site; and, e-vouchers for discounts on Canon products were given to all who attended.

Anurag Agrawal, Managing Director at Canon Middle East and Canon Eurasia said: “Canon is proud to have been the official imaging partner of the Sharjah International Film Festival for Youth and Children this year, which aims to support the next generation of creative talent. Congratulations to Hind Al Abdullah Al Mail, winner of the Canon scholarship for her animation film – we look forward to supporting her continued development and success in this creative industry.”

He continued: “It’s important as a business that we nurture the next generation of creative talent and encourage them to aspire to a career in photography and film.   Our support of the festival is in line with our corporate philosophy of kyosei, which means living and working together for the common good.”

SIFF was launched in 2013 as the first children and youth film festival in the UAE and is an initiative of FUNN, an organisation established by the Sharjah government under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah.

This is the latest in a series of initiatives in support of learning and the wider education sector by Canon Middle East. Other initiatives include ‘Canon on the Road’, targeted at youth aged 11-14, delivering solutions in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to increase access to quality, innovation-driven education.
