Abu Dhabi: The Department of Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer at Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has held a training course for students of the UAE University on the diagnosis of infertility problems, means of its treatment, and pregnancy test for farm animals (camels, cows, sheep and goats). Some 16 students from the department of veterinary medicine at the UAE University and the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), as well as six veterinarians of ADFCA's staff have participated in the course. The course aimed at introducing the students to the most important techniques and practices for the treatment of infertility among animals and improving their productivity through the artificial insemination and embryo transfer.
During the session, Eng. Ali Al Obaidli, director of the department, made a presentation, in which he clarified the major activities of animal production divisions in general and the main functions of the artificial insemination and embryo transfer department in particular. The authority's doctors also explained the department's role regarding the embryo transfer for camels (How to perform it and its benefits) and the artificial insemination for cows. In addition to categorizing the animals' different age groups, they highlighted ways to identify the most important breeds of camels, sheep, goats and cows. The authority's doctors have also educated the participants about some recommendations on barns' arrangement and balanced nutrition.
Furthermore, Mr. Al Obaidli has provided a detailed explanation of his department's functions, such as infertility problems, embryo transfer for camels and pregnancy test for farm animals, as well as the artificial insemination role in improving animal productivity and breeds. On the other hand, the students were given an opportunity to conduct hands-on training. They expressed their interest and desire to utilise all practical aspects.
The course comes in the framework of the joint cooperation between local and regional scientific and research institutions and the authority. It aimed at exchanging experiences and information that contribute to developing the animal wealth sector in the emirate through implementing and promoting the best international practices in this regard, as well as qualifying the national cadres in areas of veterinary medicine and sciences. Moreover, ADFCA seeks to recruit greater cadres to fulfill its needs in coordination with universities and educational institutes, and to cover the growing demand for these professions in the local market of Abu Dhabi.
