THE first tender of an ambitious programme to allow private real estate developers to build housing units on government land has been issued.

It features the construction of 132 homes on government land in Al Louzi, including the necessary infrastructure work related to the project.

Housing Minister Bassem Al Hamer said the project formed the pilot phase of the ambitious programme launched in October last year in co-operation with Eskan Bank.

The success of the project will help the ministry fine tune the programme before it is officially adopted.

SOLD

Under the scheme, private real estate companies will develop housing projects on government land and the units will then be sold to citizens, who are on the waiting lists, through one of the ministry’s financing programmes.

In a statement yesterday, Mr Al Hamer said the real estate developers had until March 4 to submit their bids so that construction can begin in May.

He added that if the pilot project proved successful, similar housing initiatives will be carried out across Bahrain’s four governorates, to build about 15,000 units on government land over a period of 10 years.
