DUBAI, March 7 (TRPN) - Saudi Arabia has completed the detailed design of the 1,300-kilometre Landbridge railway project which will link the country's two coasts, the chief of Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) said on Tuesday.

The Landbridge project aims to connect Jeddah port on the Red Sea to Jubail port on the Arabian Gulf.

"Landbridge project design is finished and we anticipate building the project. It will most likely be a private sector partnership...," Dr Rumaih Al Rumaih, president of the Public Transport Authority and of SRO, said in a speech at the Middle East Rail conference in Dubai.

In August 2015, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) awarded the contract for the design of the Landbridge project to Italferr, the engineering arm of Italy's state-owned Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group.

This followed an earlier contract award in July 2013 for the design of the 958-kilometre Jeddah-Riyadh section of the project.
