(TAP) - "The entry into activity of the new Terminal Operating System "TOS" at the port of Rades will be done gradually as of December 2, 2019. This system will help track the containers instantaneously and optimise the port management," said Monday STAM CEO Farhat Zouaghi.

"This essential component of the modernisation project of the Port of Rades will be accompanied by two other components, namely the establishment of a "SMART GATE" which will help organise and plan the flow of goods at the terminal’s entry and exit gates, and to acquire 6 new cranes (RTG) to increase the storage capacity of the port," he added during a one-day information seminar dedicated to the presentation of this project held on board of the ship TANIT at La Goulette port.

The official pointed out that "STAM's investment plan to modernise the port of Rades financed by means of 76 million dinars by the World Bank under the EDP III export promotion program, is aimed to restore the dynamic of the port, step up its efficiency and double the container storage capacity to 16,000 20-foot."

"It also aims to ensure the instantaneous tracking of containers in the port and optimise the movement of gear avoiding unproductive travel, to increase the performance of the embarkation and disembarkation operations, reduce the cost of storage and to better manage the flows at the port’s entrance and exit."

Taking the floor, Trade Minister Omar el Behi said that "this project is a real revolution in the port of Rades. Its objective is to raise this port to international standards in terms of transport and logistics, step up its efficiency, make life easier for economic operators and boost Tunisian export, 98% of which depend on maritime transport."

El Behi indicated that "an electronic payment system will also be made available to economic operators as part of this project.”

"The success of this project requires the involvement of all stakeholders namely agents, executives, national organisations (UGTT and UTICA, etc.). Its success is synonymous with better competitiveness for Tunisia and better positioning in the Doing Business general ranking," he assured.

For his part, World Bank Resident Representative in Tunis Tony Verheijen said that "the first three essential components of the project (TOS, Smart Gate and RTG) will be followed by two other components. It involves the development of digitised customs management systems and the modernisation of the container removal system."

"The digitisation project of customs management is at the tender selection stage. Once the companies selected, the implementation of this project, will require a year and a half to two years. With regard to the project to modernise the container removal system, a political decision is enough to implement it."
