Dubai, UAE – Ecolab, the global leader in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services that protect people and vital resources, has been recognized by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) as one of the UAE-based companies to achieve its Halal certification for locally-made cleaning and sanitizing products used by domestic food and beverage manufacturers.

As ESMA implements a strict regulatory framework to govern all UAE-made cleaning and sanitizing products that may potentially come into contact with ingredients and produce in the domestic food sector, the Authority’s Halal compliance requirements cover chemistry, materials and composition, as well as approved safety data sheets and bi-lingual labelling.

With ESMA now requiring all locally manufactured products to match the standards of certified imported products, Ecolab’s completion of the audit process in only four months has won the firm ESMA’s coveted Halal Trophy compliance certification across the company’s entire range of UAE-made cleaning products used in the food sector.

“As one of the UAE-based cleaning and sanitizing companies to apply for ESMA’s Halal certification, Ecolab applauds the Authority and the UAE’s progressive food producers for understanding the importance of the ethical production of locally-produced Halal products that enhance consumer confidence,” said Nadia Mahamoud, Director, Regulatory Affairs MEA Region, Ecolab.

Typically used to clean and sanitize the entire production line in-between manufacturing cycles, Ecolab’s Halal-certified products are currently used by dozens of the UAE’s leading food and beverage producers.

ESMA’s Halal compliance regulations come as Dubai continues to propel its global Islamic Economy capital aspirations by progressing an internationally-recognized halal accreditation network, according to Mahamoud.

“With global demand for halal food growing, the food manufacturing sector faces operational challenges due to the lack of a unified global halal standard. ESMA is facing this challenge head-on by adopting standardized Halal certification regulations and very clear compliance regulations for certain products used in the food and beverage manufacturing cycle,” added Mahamoud.
