DUBAI - Kuwait is moving forward with projects geared towards utilizing renewable energy resources, said an official at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water Tuesday.

On the sideline of the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) held in Dubai, Undersecretary at the Ministry Mohammad Bu Shehri said in a statement to KUNA that the decision to seek renewable energy resources was in line with the 2030 plan to transform Kuwait into a country that depends on alternative power.

He revealed that the ministry has assigned a committee to implement this vision which was approved by His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, adding that all state bodies in Kuwait were keen on realizing this dream.

Al-Shegaya solar and wind plant is one of the most ambitious projects aimed at providing electricity, said Bu Shehri who indicated that the facility had provided around 20 megawatt through wind power and solar energy.

The official called on other state bodies to execute steps that would provide 4,000 megawatt of clean power by 2030, saying that they were projects carried out by private sector companies with the same aim.

Bu Shehri affirmed that the ministry, in cooperation with Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), had worked on a project to install solar panels at walkways and cooperative societies in an effort to promote clean energy.

Regarding his participation at the WGES, the Kuwaiti official affirmed that it was part of ministry's efforts to exchange expertize in the domain of renewable energy with other regional and international bodies.
