Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz, a key Arab ally of the United States, congratulated Donald Trump on his U.S. presidential election victory, state news agency SPA said on Wednesday. King Salman wished Trump success in "achieving security and stability in the Middle East and the wider world".

The kingdom’s ambassador to the US, Prince Abdullah bin Faisal bin Turki, in an interview with Arab News, said he sees the “extensive relationship” between the two countries continuing under the new administration. “We welcome anybody elected in any government,” he added.

Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also congratulated Trump: "We offer our congratulations and best wishes both to President Elect Donald Trump and to the American people," Sheikh Mohammed, who is also Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, said on his official Twitter account.

"We look forward to share our message of hope, peace , tolerance and development for a better world," he added.

Iran’s foreign minister said Trump should stay committed to the nuclear deal as an international agreement, Reuters reported, citing Tasnim News.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi spoke to Trump by telephone, Reuters reported, citing an Egyptian presidency statement said. Read more here.

"The U.S. President-elect Donald Trump expressed his utmost appreciation to the president, pointing out that his was the first international call he had received to congratulate him on winning the election," the statement said. "President Trump said he looked forward to meeting the president (again) soon."

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, in a speech in the capital Ankara, said a "new page" would be opened in U.S.-Turkey relations if Washington extradited the U.S.-based cleric Turkey blames for orchestrating the July 15 failed coup.

"An area of opportunity has been created for the new president to advance relations with policies taking into account Turkey's fight against terror," Yildirim said.

In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin "expressed hope for joint work to restore Russian-American relations from their state of crisis, and also to address pressing international issues and search for effective responses to challenges concerning global security," the Kremlin said in a statement.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she looks forward to working with Trump as the US and the UK “have an enduring and special relationship based on freedom, democracy and enterprise”.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who had openly supported Hillary Clinton, congratulated Trump: "I wish him well. The Italo-American friendship is solid."

French President Francois Hollande warned the result would open up a period of uncertainty: "I congratulate him as is natural between two democratic heads of state... This American election opens a period of uncertainty."

Governments from Asia to Europe reacted with stunned disbelief at the news, while populists hailed the result as a triumph of the people over a failed political establishment.

During the U.S. election campaign, Trump expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, questioned central tenets of the NATO military alliance and suggested that Japan and South Korea should be allowed to develop nuclear weapons to shoulder their own defence burden.
