The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), in collaboration with the Brazil’s Ministry of Environment and UNICA, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association, has announced that it will set up and manage the Brazilian pavilion at the 2019 edition of Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) in Dubai as part of its upcoming participation in the event.
Organized by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), WETEX 2019, one of the world’s prestigious exhibitions, will take place from October 21 to 23, 2019 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
According to ABCC, the pavilion will feature six leading exhibitors who will showcase their latest innovations and smart solutions in water, energy, technology, and the environment. The Brazilian pavilion will be led by the Ministry of Environment and UNICA, the largest representative organization of Brazil's sugar and ethanol sector. Brazilian government members of the Ministry of Environment will also be attending WETEX to highlight the advantages of investing in the national parks of Brazil.
UNICA members are responsible for over 50 per cent of Brazilian sugarcane production, 60 per cent of ethanol production, and almost 70 per cent of the bioelectricity supplied to the National Interconnected System (SIN). The participation of UNICA at WETEX 2019 is possible due to a project partnership with The Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil). Brazil’s participation at WETEX will come at a time when the country is continuously ramping up its environmental sustainability efforts in line with its commitment made at the UN Climate Conference (COP21).
Investments in National Parks
André Germanos, Brazilian Secretary for Ecotourism, will be representing the Ministry at WETEX. With the appointment of a new government, Brazil now fosters an investor-friendly business environment, viewing foreign capital as an important part of the country’s development plan. Mr. Germanos argues that “this new model of concessions allows the entrepreneur more creative freedom, welcoming technological innovation and original solutions that only free enterprise can offer.”
With concession contracts now extended up to 30 years, the model selects projects that bring in the best business plans and most investments for the parks. Aiming for minimal direct government revenue, the main goal of the Brazilian National Parks concession is to develop them to their full potential--bringing healthy returns to the investors, creating a better understanding of the environment and driving in robust development for the people in neighboring areas which, in turn, translates directly to better protection of the environment.
Rubens Hannun, President, ABCC, said: “WETEX is a great opportunity to promote on the global stage Brazil’s achievements on the environmental sustainability front as one of the leading players in the sustainability and renewable energy segments. Brazil is a benchmarking country in terms of energy matrix with 45% of renewables, being one of the cleanest in the world. The event will also provide the participants with an interactive platform to showcase their innovative products, services, and technologies and how these can contribute to the Gulf region’s sustainability movement.”
Biofuels
Brazil has already launched a biofuel public policy called RenovaBio to promote the decarbonization of its transport sector, by increasing the amount of biofuels consumption. Ethanol is known for its energy efficiency and production chain sustainability apart from the industry’s capability to generate new jobs. The country produced 33 billion liters of ethanol, 21.5-terawatt hour (TWh) of bioelectricity, and 29 million tons of sugar, during 2018-2019, that makes Brazil among world's largest sugar and ethanol producers.
All these will be highlighted during WETEX exhibition organized to unify the global energy industry and bring together trade and technical sectors, while facilitating the creation of new trade opportunities, enhancing an exchange of ideas and experiences, and showcasing the latest innovations. The event will also promote energy-saving and environment-friendly district cooling services.
Mr. Hannun, ABCC, added: “By setting up the Brazilian pavilion at WETEX, we at ABCC will help open up opportunities for the participating organizations to not only promote their goods and services but attract new investments and partners as well. It will also be a significant platform to meet like-minded peers, pioneers, and leaders to learn about the latest technologies, identify market needs, highlight current and future projects, and capitalize on key opportunities along with the Arab region projects and programs. This forms part of our efforts at ABCC to help break new ground as well as diversify trade relations within relevant sectors”.
ABCC added that it aims to spot business opportunities for Brazilian enterprises during the event. Numerous projects, both ongoing and in the pipeline, in the Gulf region offers major expansion prospects for Brazilian companies. These include the ongoing works for Expo 2020 Dubai, a premier international exhibition.
