Iraq's planning ministry discussed steps to decongest Baghdad city, including a new highway linking the national capital to the planned new administrative city and transferring ministry departments from downtown Baghdad.
In June 2021, a Zawya Projects report, quoting local media, said Iraq is planning to build a new administrative city near Baghdad International Airport over more than 20 square kilometres.
Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Planning, told Zawya Projects that during the workshop, the Assistant Director-General of the Department of Regional and Local Development, Sawsan Jabbar Ibrahim made a multi-faceted presentation on a new development approach for Baghdad.
Al-Hindawi quoted Ibrahim as saying growing population and land use issues have made it imperative to develop new urban hubs and cities around the Iraqi capital to reduce overcrowding and other developmental problems. This should also include transferring institutions and departments affiliated to ministries from downtown Baghdad to Ali al-Wardi, Smart Al-Amal city, Al-Tharthar Tariq, or one of the proposed new cities near Baghdad.
The workshop, the ministry spokesperson said, discussed the building of a highway linking the Iraqi capital to the new administrative city and the construction of a fourth and a fifth ring road around Baghdad.
