Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and Saudi Arabia-headquartered power and water developer ACWA Power have discussed the development of solar power projects in the country, the ministry said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency.

The statement said the Iraqi acting Minister of Electricity, Adel Karim, had "held a video meeting with the Saudi ACWA Power Company, and they discussed ways of cooperation in solar energy projects.”

The statement quoted the minister as saying that that Iraq possesses vast areas in the south which can be exploited for solar power projects.

"We are ready through periodic meetings to reach the conclusion of any possible agreement, and we will designate a negotiating team to hold these meetings to reach the best results," the statement said.

On Monday, Saudi English language newspaper Arab News had reported that Iraq is in advanced discussions with the Saudi utility company to generate 1,000 megawatts of solar power in the Najaf Governorate.
