• By encouraging users to sign up for the challenge via the STEPP app, the homegrown platform aims to register 50 million steps in one day and help raise awareness about diabetes

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – STEPPI, the award-winning health and wellbeing software platform for organisations, communities and individuals, is proud to support the Landmark Group’s annual Beat Diabetes walkathon and help raise awareness about the critical health condition.

Taking place physically at Zabeel Park, Dubai on Friday, November 26, STEPPI has partnered with the event tooffer real time data via a large screen and a virtual way of participating in the symbolic group walk. For the first time ever, those who are unable to attend the event in person can simply download the STEPPI app and participate by contributing  steps from wherever they are in the world.

Each participant will be asked to register their steps on the STEPPI app, and the organisation aims to generate an incredible 50 million steps in one day, all in the name of educating people about diabetes.

STEPPI will heighten the buzz around the event by offering prizes and incentives sponspred by Emax for participants, and the total number of steps completed will be broadcast live at Zabeel Park.

All entry fees for the Beat Diabetes walkathon will be donated to the Al Jalila Foundation Dubai, where it will be used to fund diabetes research and treatment. Entries to the physical event at Zabeel Park are priced AED 20 for adults and AED 10 for children, while those who complete the event virtually simply need to download the STEPPI app, which is available for both iOS and Android.

The Beat Diabetes initiative was launched in 2009 as part of the Landmark Group's Corporate Social Responsibility campaign. Aiming to create awareness about the prevention and management of diabetes, the initiative has so far engaged over 120,000 participants across the GCC.

Joe Franklin, Co-found of STEPPI, said: “STEPPI was founded through a desire to improve the population’s health and wellness. So, considering that a shocking 30 percent of the population in the UAE now suffers from diabetes or pre-diabetes, we were delighted to partner with the Landmark Group and help them educate people about this serious condition. By making the event virtual it means that people can join in with the campaign from wherever they are in the country, and enjoy a walk around their own community whilst knowing that thousands of others are all doing the same in the name of diabetes awareness. I’m so excited to see if we can meet our goal of 50 million steps in a day, and hopefully instill a new love for walking and outdoor activity within more people across Dubai.”

Renuka Jagtiani, Chairwoman & CEO of Landmark Group, commented: “We’ve been hosting the Beat Diabetes Event for 12 years at Zabeel Park every November in a lead up to the World Diabetes Awareness day. This year we are embracing a hybrid model to the customary walk by partnering with STEPPI to extend our event to the virtual realm thereby allowing even more people to participate in our community initiative and contribute to our 50M step challenge to raise awareness about diabetes. Our business & employees are spread across the Middle East and this hybrid model would offer a technologically advanced way to participate in our initiative & support the cause. It’s always so heartwarming to see our annual event receive such incredible support from our local community, the Government, as well as the public and private sector companies. By working together, we are confident that we can make a vital difference to diabetes research and treatment. We look forward to more and more people actively participating in the Beat Diabetes Event 2021, both physically and virtually.”

To join the virtual Beat Diabetes walk, participants simply need to download the STEPPI app and sign up for the challenge.
