Dubai: The world of Russian ‘Moda’ comes to life this February at The Concrete, Alserkal Avenue. The exhibit, named ‘RUSSIA: HER STYLE AND SOUL’ (RHSS) illustrates how a country found its organic reflection in global fashion changes. From the collection of the Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation, the immense wealth of Russian style will be presented in all the luxury and variety of Russia's social classes; from the traditional folk styles, the merchant class’ flamboyance, the royal court’s elegance and the Russian theatre’s vivid colours and extravagant styles.
Colour, silhouette and decorative components – embroidery, applique patterns and fur trimmings – were fundamental to Russian style. Until the reign of Peter the Great, the so-called boyar style dominated, having absorbed many elements of Slavic, Byzantine and eastern cultures. Visitors will be impressed by the golden embroidery on the kokoshnik and kichka (headdresses of married women), the richly patterned silk on festive sarafan (sleeveless dress worn by Russian women), dushegreya and yepanechka (A-shaped short jackets, with or without sleeves, usually padded, decorated and made of precious fabric) and the beaded and pearl decorated hems. Russia’s rather harsh climate always made outerwear an important element in the wardrobe of Russian quaintrelles. Outerwear of fur, felt, velvet, cloth and wool was worn in Russia before the 1917 Revolution, and the exhibit includes superb examples, most notably unique women’s capes, wraps, muffs, hats and neckpieces trimmed with ermine, marten, sable, and mink. In addition, visitors will see wonderful ensembles created for balls celebrating the New Year, Christmas, the Maslenitsa (Pre-Lent) festival and Easter. In Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russian aristocrats strictly followed Paris fashion canons, which became part of royal court etiquette. Visitors will see work by such renowned fashion houses as Worth, Paquin, Paul Poiret, Cherhuit and Brisac. Empress Alexandra Fiodorovna’s magnificent cape and Countess Benkendorf’s court dress feature among the masterpieces on exhibit.
The Alexandre Vassiliev Foundation’s unique collection includes a large selection of Russian theatre costumes, those made for classic 19th-century Russian operas - The Tsar's Bride, The Mermaid, Prince Igor, as well as those created for the Sergey Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons, the 150th anniversary of which will be celebrated in 2022. These costumes are based on sketches by Nikolai Roerich, Konstantin Korovin, Leon Bakst, Natalia Goncharova and other internationally known artists. Russian style became a flagship of world fashion in the early 20th century due to the power of colour, the picturesqueness of décor and the ingenuity of shape.
A section of the exhibition will be devoted to the Doctor Zhivago style, which burst into Western fashion with the release of the film based on Boris Pasternak’s novel of the same name. Russian style was not immune from the film’s influence, reflected in the appearance of Russian Civil War-style clothes with synthetic or natural fur trim and slanted collars in the manner of a kosovorotka shirt, etc.
Dubai has always appreciated designers’ creativity. RHSS is the first expansive exhibit in Dubai of Russian style, which influenced fashion designers in Paris, Milan, London and New York. Moscow, the heart and capital of Russia, has always been at the forefront of creative fashion; this exhibit, like a Russian matryoshka doll, continually reveals new facets of Russia’s rich collections.

About Moscow's bid to host EXPO-2030
In April 2021, Russia was the first to nominate Moscow for the right to host EXPO - 2030. The theme of the Russian Exhibition is "Human Progress: a Shared Vision for a World of Harmony".
Russia has been participating in the EXPO since the very first exhibition in 1851 in London, the Russian pavilions have been repeatedly recognized as the best, and the demonstrated domestic inventions have repeatedly received prestigious awards. But at the same time, Russia has never held an EXPO.
If Moscow wins, the exhibition will be held from April 27 to October 27, 2030.
