Dubai-UAE-Urbanization and fast adaptation of new technologies are trends that are rapidly influencing the world today, according to Dr. Ashish Khandpur, 3M Senior Vice-President for Research and Development and Chief Technology Officer, who will deliver a keynote speech during the 2015 Internet of Things World Forum.

Participating as a Diamond sponsor, 3M, a science-based company that inspires creative collaboration, will engage in various sessions during all three days of the forum to showcase the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) in relation to smart cities, sustainability and improving people's lives.

"Urbanization and fast adaptation of new technologies continue to emphasize the significance and relevance of sustainable solutions that will help meet societal demands around basic needs, security and productivity," said Dr. Ashish Khandpur. "According to industry reports, cities occupy 2 per cent of the world's landmass, contain 50 percent of its population and consume 80 percent of resources. At 3M, we use our scientific and technical capabilities to innovate products and solutions in diverse markets to address some of the challenges of urbanization."

A recent report published by Monitor Deloitte stated that the smart cities market will significantly increase over the next five years anywhere from US$400 billion to US$1 trillion by 2020. Furthermore, Gartner stated that 4.9 billion "things" are expected to be connected via the IoT by the end of this year. This is further projected to reach 200 billion smart objects within the next decade with Cisco estimating private-sector profits to reach $14.4 trillion as a direct result of the IoT.

Apart from Smart Cities' keynote speech by Dr. Ashish Khandpur, 3M speakers will tackle a number of issues related to the use of Intelligent Traffic applications in reducing criminal activity and border surveillance; the use of Sustainable/Green Data Centers in IoT; and how 3M science and technology can help make things smarter and enable the IoT economy.

Across the globe, 3M is inspiring innovation and igniting progress, all while contributing to global sustainable development through environmental protection, corporate and social responsibility and economic progress. Its solutions include energy management, traffic optimization, enhanced worker safety, robust infrastructure and increased security for individuals and communities. Combining available digital technology capabilities with the products and domain knowledge of the physical world, 3M is uniquely positioned to serve the needs of people and the societies.

The Internet of Things World Forum takes place from 6 to 8 December 2015 and will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre in Dubai, UAE.
