In an age of 'challenges' going viral in the World Wide Web, Apple is taking its own 'shot' at it.

And if you've always wondered how your own snaps can be splashed across those huge billboards with the 'Shot on iPhone' tag, now's your big chance.

The US tech giant has launched its 'Shot on iPhone Challenge', calling on users to share the best photos taken on their iPhones.

The competition began on January 22 and will run until February 7. It will culminate in the selection of the 10 best snaps, which will be unveiled in February.

A panel of 11 judges has been selected to name the winners, including Pete Souza, the chief White House photographer of former US president Barack Obama; Chinese contemporary visual artist and entrepreneur Chen Man; and Apple's very own Phil Schiller, the company's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing and a key contributor to the iPhone's camera innovation.

Participants - who must be 18 years old and above - can send their entries in a number of ways, including posting them on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #ShotOniPhone; users of China's Weibo can use #ShotOniPhone#. Entries through these social media channels must include the iPhone model on its captions.

Alternatively, an image in its highest resolution can be sent to shotoniphone@apple.com, with the file format 'firstname_lastname_iphonemodel'.

The 10 winning photos will get some pretty nice coverage: the shots will be featured on Apple's website, newsroom, social media accounts and retail stores, as well as billboards across select cities all over the world.

Apple unveiled three new iPhones - the XS, XS Max and XR -last September, which come with Apple's latest camera technologies, including Smart HDR, enhanced depth capabilities, advanced algorithms and faster sensors.

And don't fret if you haven't upgraded yet to these new devices: all iPhone models are eligible to be used in Apple's challenge.
