Dubai, UAE: HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), reviewed the progress on the sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO)-based desalination plant at the DEWA Jebel Ali Power & Desalination Complex. This is one of the main complexes providing Dubai with reliable, efficient, and high-quality electricity and water services.

Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation at DEWA; Mansoor Al Suwaidi, Vice President for Projects at Generation; and Masoud Kamali, Project Manager, accompanied the MD & CEO on the tour.

Al Tayer was briefed on the project’s progress, which is now 13.6% complete. The civil construction works, drilling and site processing have commenced, and concrete work began in February. Al Tayer reiterated that the project meets the highest standards of health, safety, and quality.

DEWA awarded an AED 871-million contract for the construction of the SWRO-based desalination plant in Jebel Ali to a joint venture comprising ACCIONA Agua SA and Belhasa Six Construct (BeSIX). The new plant is being developed as a brownfield seawater desalination plant and associated facilities, with the selected desalination technology is SWRO, double pass reverse osmosis, including pre-treatment facilities. This plant is expected to be commissioned by May 2020 to meet the reserve margin criterion set for peak water demand for the year 2020 and beyond.

This project is in line with DEWA’s decoupling plans for water desalination and power production and water desalination using solar power. The big projects launched by DEWA have contributed in reducing the production cost of electricity through solar energy on a global level. DEWA continues to decouple electricity production from water desalination to obtain 100% desalinated water using a mix of clean energy and waste heat by 2030. This will allow Dubai to exceed global targets for using clean energy to desalinate water.
