WORK on securing the embankment of the lake in Al Lawzi has been completed, the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry announced yesterday.

Bahrain’s only natural lake, which can hold nearly 650,000 cubic metres of water, is fed through a rainwater drainage network.“This lake is of environmental importance as it attracts different types of birds and plants, besides providing a natural seascape for the residents of the region,” said a ministry statement.

The GDN previously reported that the lake was flooded during the heavy downpour last month, mainly due to the existing sewage treatment plants reaching full capacity and being unable to absorb additional water flow.

The ministry statement added that solutions were under study to maintain the cleanliness of the water in the lake by diverting the flow of water when it is full and providing an exit for drainage water into the sea in emergency cases in an environmentally sound manner.Meanwhile, roads leading to Al Lawzi housing, southeast of Zaid Bin Omaira Street and west of the lake have also been completed, according to the ministry.

The project also included the construction of new main lines to the lake to drain rainwater, as well as new water pumps and tanks.
