Soil testing is being conducted to prepare for the construction of multi-level car parking facilities in the Central Business District (CBD) area of Muscat.

“The facilities should be strong enough so that they do not get damaged due to heavy load. One of the first few steps before actually starting construction is to determine the reliability of the sites. The choice of the type of foundation and further design are based on data of chemical properties of the soil. The soil testing is being conducted by an expert company,” a Muscat Municipality official said. The Muscat Municipality has identified two locations in the CBD area of Ruwi to build multi-level parking facilities. One site is near the Central Bank of Oman, while the other is near the office of the Directorate of Muttrah.

“If there is little or no data of engineering geological investigations the probability of engineering mistakes during the design increases. Subsequently, an improperly designed foundation may cause deformation and premature destruction of constructed buildings,” the official said. Once the soil testing is done, the conclusion is given in the form of a document with legal force. The conclusion has legal force giving the organisation official permission to carry out works on the construction site, he said.

“Soil testing will be conducted at 12 sites in the CBD area. We are checking for soil stiffness. It is essential as we will only have two-storey car parking here.” Muscat Municipality plans to build a total of four multi-level parking facilities in Ruwi. “There will be restaurants, coffee shops and various other shops on the ground floor depending on the type of the site.”

Parking fee will be 200bz per hour in these facilities. “CBD area has a lot of business houses. Due to parking constraint business is being affected. That is why it has become important to go for multi-level car parking facilities. People had started parking randomly at undesignated places. To put an end to all of this we decided to go for a multi-level car parking in this area,” the official added.
