FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company, has transitioned to a direct-serve presence in Egypt to meet the growing demand for international shipping services in the country.

Jack Muhs, regional president of FedEx Express Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa, said the transition involves providing direct access to a dedicated support team, an extended portfolio of international services, and digital tools that meet their needs.

The transition will help Egyptian companies across industries to trade with ease and expand their reach into the more than 220 countries and territories the company serves, FedEx Express said in a press statement.

The company has been facilitating trade in Egypt since 1994 and has been offering its solution and services through local licensee Egypt Express since 1998 to date.

The statement said Egypt Express would continue to provide the local infrastructure for ground operations.

Egypt Express Chairman Ahmed Shaheen said his company would continue to support FedEx Express with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including its newly opened 13,000 square metre (sqm) cargo centre in Cairo International Airport, 51 retail locations in 25 governorates, and more than 360 vehicles to serve its operations in Egypt.

Shaheen added that Egypt Express intends to open a new 5,000 sqm shipping, sorting, and distribution centre in Obour City in two months.

Muhs said the company’s strategic expansion in Egypt will help local businesses connect to more markets and customers worldwide, supporting Egypt’s Sustainable Development goals under the country’s Vision 2030 to diversify the national economy.

“Thanks to the positive transformations in the country’s logistics sector, many companies have reported that they plan to shift their production line or expand their existing production line in the country, providing logistics companies like FedEx a wide range of opportunities,” he said.

Commenting on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the express transportation industry, Muhs said the shipping and logistics sector was affected during the pandemic, as about 50 percent of the air trade movement is via passenger planes, and these were affected by the closure and suspension of passenger air traffic during the pandemic.

He said FedEx Express was able to play a significant role during the pandemic as from January 2020 to August 2021, it moved about 110 tonnes of protective supplies and 2.5 billion protective face masks around the world. The company was also able to deliver COVID-19 vaccines and vaccine manufacturing materials to about 50 countries.
