Muscat: Energy-saving LED street lights are being installed by Municipality instead of the traditional ones on the main streets of Muscat governorate the municipality said.
The move aims to rationalise electricity consumption and use environmentally friendly alternatives that support vibrant cities and are free from environmental and health impacts.
“The Directorate General of Projects has, so far, installed 100 LED street lights along the 18th November Street in Al Azaiba,” the municipality said.
Engineer Ziad bin Abdul Majid Al Zadjali, Director of the Lighting Department at Muscat Municipality, confirmed the project would cover a number of streets in Muscat.
“The first phase includes implementing of LED lights starting from Bait Al Barakah roundabout to Qasr Al Seeb roundabout, then to Qurum, Darsait, Quriyat, Al Arfan Street to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Airport Heights,” he said.
The project is expected to cut electricity consumption by 60 per cent and aims to ration electricity consumption, conserve energy and achieve sustainable development standards, with an operating period of up to 20 years and a 10-year warranty.
“This project will provide great advantages, the most important of them being the rationing of electricity consumption by 60 per cent and the conservation of energy resources,” Al Zadjali said.
He added that the project would achieve an environmental impact in terms of reducing carbon emissions resulting from reduced
power demand from generation plants, rationalisation of consumption and minimising maintenance costs.
“The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in the first half of next year,” he explained.
