Egypt is studying new phases for Line 4 of Greater Cairo Metro including an extension for current Phase 1, the Minister of Transport said.

Line 4’s Phase 1 extends approximately 19 kilometres from Hadayek El Ashgar Station to the centre of Cairo at El Fustat and includes 16 stations.

Kamel El-Wazir said a study is underway to extend Phase 1 to El Fardous City to serve the sectors of 6th of October City, located south of the Bahariya Oasis Road.

The minister also indicated that studies are underway for Phase 2, which will extend 23 km from El Fustat to New Cairo and include 21 stations.

The statements were made during the signing of a loan agreement on Tuesday between the Minister and Shino Masao, Senior Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Egypt Office for Greater Cairo Metro Line 4 Phase 1 Project (II).

He disclosed that talks are on with JICA to study the implementation of Phase 3 of Line 4, which will extend the line further to the New Administrative Capital.

The total project cost of Line 4, Phase 1 is 500.035 billion Japanese yen ($3.8 billion), according to JICA’s Ex-Ante Evaluation statement on the project. The project schedule is from March 2012 to February 2030, with the facilities opened to serve the public in February 2028.
