• As part of the campaign, an awareness session on e-waste was virtually conducted by Crown Industries, focusing on the various methods of recycling e-waste and its importance.
  • Zain Bahrain’s e-waste Recycling Initiative was launched in 2011 and falls under its flagship sustainability project, a corporate responsibility initiative to promote environmental awareness.

Manama, Bahrain :  Zain Bahrain, a telecommunications industry innovator in the Kingdom, organized an e-waste awareness campaign, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Salmaniya. The initiative, organized for Rotary club members, highlighted the importance of repairing or correctly disposing of their appliances to increase re-use, recovery, and recycling rates.

Zain Bahrain’s ‘e-waste Recycling Initiative’ falls under its flagship sustainability project, which is a corporate responsibility initiative to promote environmental awareness and find solutions to the growing waste through responsible e-waste management. The company continuously partners with organizations in the Kingdom to bring about positive change in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 for Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 12 for Responsible Consumption and Production.

As part of the initiative with the Rotary Club, an awareness session with an intent to instill a culture of e-waste recycling amongst members in support of the movement for a cleaner and greener Bahrain. The session was virtually conducted by Crown Industries, a recycling pioneer in Bahrain, focusing on the importance of e-waste recycling, the various stages involved and various ways of recycling e-waste. The session concluded with a call to action, where members were encouraged to collect two tons of e-waste starting from September. The members were encouraged to dispose off their electronic waste in a drop box located at Zain Bahrain's headquarters in the Seef District. The initiative was further promoted on their social media channels where club members were encouraged to post their pictures disposing of their e-waste using the hashtags #weeebh #zeewaste and tagging @rotarysalmaniya and @zainbahrain.

Commenting on the collaboration with the Rotary Club and the e-waste initiative, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Khalid Al Khalifa, Director of Communications & Investor Relations at Zain Bahrain, said, “Zain Bahrain aims to promote environmental awareness by finding solutions to reduce e-waste. We firmly believe that it is important to highlight the need to reduce toxic pollution and have devised initiatives to motivate and encourage members of society to become responsible advocates. Our e-waste initiative has achieved tremendous results in the past; we intend to encourage a healthy environment by promoting ways of disposing off electrical equipment correctly. He further added, "With COVID-19, our dependency on electrical devices has tremendously increased; hence it is our responsibility as a corporate to educate people on how to dispose off their e-waste. We are happy to collaborate with the Rotary Club of Salmaniya and are thrilled to see the participation received. We believe the session will have a positive impact and increase awareness among members.”

Faisal Juma, President of Rotary Club of Salmaniya, said, “We believe that e-waste is the fastest-growing domestic waste stream and it is important for us to create awareness and improve the methods of collection and treatment. As a community service organization, it is our mission to educate the local community on the risks associated with e-waste and its impact on the environment." He further added, "The session conducted by Zain Bahrain and Crown Industries has certainly been an eye opener for our members, and we hope that they become e-waste ambassadors and continue to educate the public on e-waste handing and collection, its impact on human health and the environment.”

Ali Al Saad, Managing Director, Crown Industries commented, “Crown Industries is a pioneer in its recycling operation in Bahrain and is the only company in the Kingdom with the full capability to recycle plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal, obsolete machinery, electrical and telecommunications cable and equipment. Our challenge as an organization is related to the lack of awareness of recycling. We are pleased to have conducted this awareness session to address the topic of recycling by collaborating with various companies in the Kingdom. Through the session, with Zain Bahrain and the Rotary Club of Salmaniya, we aim to educate various pockets of society and have them come forward and support the cause to channelize e-waste recycling.”

Zain Bahrain also organized e-waste competitions across Bahrain in public and private schools to create awareness and instill a recycling culture amongst the youth. Zain Bahrain has emphasized that instead of burning and dumping unwanted electronics, selling or donating them online, or finding ways to fix them can fundamentally reduce e-waste's impact on the environment.
