At a press conference held in Doha on May 7, 2007 the World Trade Center Qatar (WTC) and the Cyprus International Institute of Management (CIIM) announced their joint initiative to offer a series of world-class executive development programs specifically tailored to the needs and opportunities of Qatar and the Gulf Region.
Dr Theodore Panayotou, CIIM Director and Harvard professor, announced that this program is the result of combined efforts and resources of the World Trade Center Qatar, a dynamic promoter of international trade and investment in the region, and the Cyprus International Institute of Management, the leading international Business School at the interface of the European Union with the Middle East. He explained that these programs are delivered by international management gurus and renowned academics from leading European and American business schools such as Harvard, MIT, Wharton, London Business School, Oxford, and Cambridge, with hands-on management and consulting experience with some of the world's most successful businesses, including many Fortune 500 companies.
Dr Panayotou considered that the Middle East is currently one of the world's strongest emerging markets. Companies conducting business in this dynamic region have to be well placed in order to take advantage of the increasing opportunities. The aim of these programs is to strengthen the leadership and management skills and competencies of both senior and mid level managers and help them successfully meet the challenges and exploit the opportunities created by constant change in the increasingly competitive environment of the region.
He emphasized that the joined CIIM-WTC Executive Programs provide fundamental management skills needed by managers to perform to a world standard of excellence, as well as leadership skills to enable them to advance to the next level of corporate hierarchy. The modules are customized to meet the immediate needs of managers and fit the time and resources of busy executives, thus providing exceptional value for money. He went on to recount the benefits to individual companies through higher level of efficiency, profitability and competitiveness. He added that individual participants have a unique opportunity to acquire essential management skills and apply them to increasingly complex business situations, thus benefiting both their own careers and their companies.
Dr Panayotou, who has been teaching at Harvard University for the past 25 years, explained that CIIM is a highly specialized school, concentrating exclusively on advanced studies in management and leadership. CIIM has earned an international reputation as a centre of excellence in business education and research with Students, business leaders and academics from around the globe. Chadi Abou Daher, Regional Manager of the World Trade Center Qatar, considered that the launching of this program comes at a very important phase in the development of Qatar economy, and is conforming to the country's quest for excellence in education. He added that the program will provide for the continuous development of management and leadership skills, helping business corporations to successfully meet the challenges and exploit the opportunities created by constant change in a highly competitive environment.
Abou Daher explained that education services are among the many business and trade services WTC Qatar is providing. As a member of the World Trade Centers Association in New York, WTC Qatar is part of an international network of 300 WTCs in 85 countries. He said that this is not the first time that a World Trade Center embarks on such an initiative in providing executive education program. In different places around the globe, WTCs are known for providing world-class education services to their business community covering different areas of management disciplines.
Abou Daher concluded that this executive program is designed not just for Qatar but also for a regional audience. Current developments in Qatar are conducive for such plans of establishing Qatar as a regional education and training center.
In addition to the open program, CIIM-WTC partnership is also offering custom-made in-company training programs for performance driven organizations who wish to improve their staff's technical, managerial, strategic and operational skills and apply these skills to achieve ambitious goals of increased productivity and growth, immediately in the work place.
The launching was highlighted by a keynote presentation on "Strategy in the Context of the Middle East" by Manchester Business School Professor Gordon Mandry, a world-leading marketing strategist. Prof Mandry identified and addressed the question of how to manage the challenges of operating in the highly competitive environment that characterizes many of the markets in the Middle East. This includes dealing with new entrants, maintaining market share, handling economic liberalization, surviving rapid cost escalation, managing capacity issues, and avoiding complexity cost. Prof Mandry argued the need for companies not to be merely operational but to develop a clearly defined strategy based on a detailed understanding of the external environment and what it takes to win.
The launching was held at the Diplomatic Club and was attended by senior executives from leading companies and organizations in Qatar.
