Charged with Selecting Student Award Winners for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education in the UAE    

Abu Dhabi (Gulf Intelligence): Professors from the UK’s Imperial College, which is ranked as the number-one engineering university in the world, and New York University joined their peers from renowned regional institutions, including Khalifa University and American University of Sharjah, on the 2020 Academic Review Board for the UAE Student Awards for Advancement of Post-Graduate Education. 

H.E. Dr. Matar Al Neyadi, Undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Energy and Industry, led the group of distinguished international academics, who included the Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Imperial College London, Dr. Martin J. Blunt, the NYU Global Professor of Engineering, Dr. Nidal Hilal, and Dr. Steve Griffiths, who received his PhD & MBA from MIT, who were charged with the responsibility of selecting the 2020 Student Award Winners for the Advancement of Post Graduate Education in the UAE.

“One of the biggest opportunities and challenges facing countries all over the world is to build a Knowledge economy,” said Sean Evers, Managing Partner of Gulf Intelligence and Chairman of the Academic Review Board. “It is critical to move beyond being simply a consumer of knowledge and become one that is also a creator of knowledge, which isn’t possible without robust post-graduate education programmes,” he added.

The UAE Student Awards for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education, now in their third year, are held annually Under the Patronage of the UAE Minister of Energy & Industry, H.E. Suhail Al-Mazrouei. They celebrate UAE nationals who have continued their education through to Masters and PhD level, and produced dissertations that have contributed to the advancement of science and research.      

The six-member Academic Review Board, comprised of distinguished thinkers from all over the world who collectively boast more than 100 years of higher education and academic experience, also included Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Raeesi, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering and Chair of the Chemical & Petroleum Engineering, Department, UAE University, and Dr. Wei Zhao, Chief Research Officer, American University Sharjah. The Board utilized a set of criteria to select two Masters’ and two PhD students to act as ambassadors for the Advancement of Post-Graduate Education in the UAE, critical for the development of an in-country R&D ecosystem and knowledge economy.

The 2020 Awards presentation will be hosted at NYU Abu Dhabi on Jan. 8th, 2020.

Award Nominee Process: Students, Professors, and Industry stakeholders are invited to nominate exemplary Post-Graduates at MA and PhD level, along with details on how their respective research supports the UAE’s future development goals.

·  A minimum of 3 members of the Academic Review Board score each nominee.

·  The nominees are ranked according to their scores, and the top two in each category are declared the Winners and presented with their awards at the UAE Energy Forum at NYU Abu Dhabi.
