BUC begins to receive registrations

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - August 10, 2010:  The first educational institution in the region that offers biotechnology degrees opened in Dubai under the name of Biotechnology University College (BUC). The college has started to receive applications for registration and to introduce its programs in the biotechnology major that has become very significant in these days.

The administration of the BUC aims to attract more students from the Middle East region, owing to the innovative and high-quality programs provided to the students. It also concerns the administration of the college to draw the attention of the students' parents to this major and to its high significance and uniqueness, which enhances the process of future success for their children in their professional lives.

In this context, the Dean of the BUC, Prof. Magdy Madkour said that all programs offered by the College are accredited and licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the UAE, which gives the student the confidence to continue his university education without drawbacks. Prof. Madkour added that the students who wish to join the college's programs have the option to earn a second bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from State University of New York at Oswego in the United States of America.

Prof. Magdy Madkour stated that what distinguishes the Biotechnology these days is that it eventually became one of the most modern scientific techniques to solve problems and create useful products, pointing out that the concept of Biotechnology has been used since thousands of years when animals and plants were utilized for the production of food, clothing and medicine. This concept began to change during the 30s and 40s of the 20th century, when some micro-organisms were used for the production of antibiotics and vaccines, as well as yeasts. And finally, the concept of this science evolved after the discovery of the Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in its minor details such as chromosomes, genes and nitrogenous bases, and during the 60s and 70s of the last century, mankind began to use some of the components of the cells in Biotechnological applications, which developed the concept of biotechnology to very specialized applications.

Prof. Madkour confirmed that there are many positive features of Biotechnology applications, including Biotechnology medical applications which are made using microbes as a vital element in the production of pharmacology, such as antibiotics and insulin, in addition to the mapping of the human genetic, and then disposing of the genes that cause diseases and many others. There are also Biotechnology agricultural applications including the use of microbes as a vital element, for example to produce biologicals used in plant nutrition, in pesticide resistance or in transforming agricultural remnants to fertilizers. In addition to these Biotechnology agricultural applications, Madkour mentioned those that do not use microbes as a vital element, such as the production of plants resistant to drought, salinity and pesticide.

He also highlighted the presence of environment Biotechnology applications, in which microbes are used as a vital element, in order to either get rid of environmental pollutants such as disposal of oily stains in aqueous media, or to treat the sewage and industrial wastewater.

"One of the underlying keys of the Biotechnology is the 'gene', where there are many vital advantages and benefits for such a  specialization, which is being taught in the region for the first time, including the reduction in the transmission of human and animal diseases, owing to the new vaccines and the genetic modification, so that it contains pro-vitamin or iron, which leads to improving the health condition of many societies with low income, and to the production of genetically modified organisms that work to clear up oil spills and remove heavy metals", Prof. Magdy Madkour said.
