The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) highlighted its latest medical services, smart systems and technologies at the Dubai International Government Achievements Exhibition on Sunday.
DHA displayed its latest innovative services at the three-day exhibition, which was held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
His Excellency Humaid Al Qatami, Chairman of the Board and Director-General of DHA said the exhibition provides an important opportunity for all government departments and authorities to showcase their latest initiatives. He said the exhibition is a form of healthy competition that drives government authorities and departments to roll out quality services to the public.
In line with DHA's goal to have a happier and healthier society, Al Qatami said DHA is keen to continue on launching state-of-the-art technologies, smart systems and apps, and international-standard services.
The innovative technologies, smart apps and projects that were highlighted at the exhibition include:
Innovative technologies
- Medical 3D printing technology: The DHA is all set to begin using 3D printed technology to print 3D model of teeth for producing prosthesis for its patients, The use of this technology is the beginning of the Authority’s ambitious plans to use 3D printing in all fields of healthcare. The DHA’s dental department has already procured all the necessary equipment and is now conducting training sessions for its staff members so that they can begin incorporating this technology. Research is already taking place into the mass production of hearing aids prosthetics and implants.
- Dubai Robodoc: DHA is the first government health organization in the region to implement telehealth. As part of this initiative, the authority placed a number of Robodocs in various DHA facilities ensuring immediate access to specialized consultation, which is particularly helpful in emergency situations. Telehealth provides immediate access to consultation with specialists. In fact, through the robot, doctors can consult with two or more specialists in different health facilities at the same time to get immediate specialized consultation.
- SLEMT: is an automated Self-Assessment Chair that preforms a complete body composition analysis, blood circulation analysis and stress analysis, in a precise and accurate way.
- Medical Education Stimulation Screen aims to provide students with training on how to properly assess patients while maintaining patient safety.
Smart projects and systems
- Blood Donors smart services: the services launched by DHA can be accessed through an app making it easier to find a time and place to make a blood donation. It will also allow them to answer donation eligibility questionnaire and read pre-donation educational material through their mobile phones before they come to the donation center. The app will inform the donor about their next donation date. Donors will also be able to receive appreciation letters and invitations for activities related to blood donation through their smart device and get notifications for donation campaigns. The app registers donors and potential donors who agree to donate blood during emergencies and disasters so that they can be added to the Centre’s database, this is particularly important when the need arises for rare blood groups.
- Dubai Health Experience (DXH): The DXH project was launched with aim of revitalizing medical tourism in the city and making Dubai a favorite global destination for medical tourism. The project aims to attract 500,000 tourists by the year 2020 to advance Dubai’s status in the international map of medical tourism, hence benefiting from its promising investment opportunities. The www.dxh.ae website is a first-of-its-kind in the world as it is the only single electronic medical tourism window that provides all medical tourism related services under one website.
- Salama: The electronic record system launched by DHA aims to provide patients access to their medical record through a patient portal and ensure that the electronic patient medical record is available across the DHA health facilities. So far 1.4 million DHA patient medical records and 112 million transactions have been transferred to the Salama system and 11,000 DHA staff will be trained on how to use the system in 2017. The training process started on January 29 this year.
- Smart Pharmacy: The smart pharmacy is the first robot in the Middle East for dispensing and prescribing medication in Rashid Hospital. The robot, which can store up to 35,000 medicines and dispenses around 12 prescriptions in less than one minute, will start serving customers on Sunday. The robot dispenses the prescribed medication with a click of a bottom based on a barcode, minimising any human error.
- Hasana: Is a Public Health Surveillance network that provides decision makers working in the health sector with the information needed to monitor and prevent the spread of contagious diseases by making student’s medical records electronically accessible.
Smart Apps
- The Tifli (my baby) app: provides information for pregnant women from preconception until the baby is two years. App users can reschedule or cancel a doctor’s appointment, they have access to videos and articles on best practices during different stages of pregnancy, they can track their baby’s growth and weekly milestones, and they can monitor their labour pain and understand their contractions better so as to know when they should visit a hospital. They can also use the app to make an emergency call to their husband or registered family member
- Hayati (My life) app: enables Type I and Type II diabetics to monitor their conditions. Its key features include glucose tracker, medication tracker, BMI tracker, blood pressure tracker. It allows users to take medication on time and also keep a medication diary with dosage information and reminders. Patients can also manage their appointments, reschedule and cancel them with any DHA healthcare professional using the mobile application.
- TummyFish App aims to make drinking water more fun for children by providing a fun and interactive tool for parents to help track their children’s daily water intake.

About the Dubai Health Authority:
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) was created, in June 2007, by Law 13 issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, with an expanded vision to include strategic oversight for the complete health sector in Dubai and enhance private sector engagement. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance is the President of the Dubai Health Authority and His Excellency Humaid Al Qatami is the Chairman of the Board and Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority.
The DHA’s aim in Dubai is to provide an accessible, effective and integrated healthcare system, protect public health and improve the quality of life within the Emirate. This is a direct translation of the objectives of the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Keeping the strategic plan in mind, the DHA’s mission is to ensure access to health services, maintain and improve the quality of these services, improve the health status of nationals, residents and visitors and oversee a dynamic, efficient and innovative health sector.
In addition to overseeing the health sector for the Emirate of Dubai, the DHA also focuses on providing services through DHA healthcare facilities including hospitals (Latifa, Dubai, Rashid and Hatta), specialty centres (e.g. the Dubai Diabetes Center) and DHA primary health centres spread throughout the Emirate of Dubai.
The main pillars of service delivery at DHA health facilities are quality, efficiency, patients and staff. It is our aim to maintain and improve the quality and efficiency of DHA health services. An important aspect of the service delivery strategy is to focus on patients, their needs and satisfaction as well as attract, retain, nurture and support outstanding staff.
Prior to the establishment of the DHA, the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), which was established in 1973, was the functioning authority that almost exclusively focused on health service delivery.
