BUiD's EdD students participate in a luncheon Seminar in Oxford-UK and present papers at a major Commonwealth conference in Cyprus
Dubai, UAE: Four BUiD doctoral students recently got the opportunity to present their research work designs at a luncheon seminar in Oxford, England, as part of an effort to showcase BUiD research in international venues. Students Abeer Al Rasbi, Aisha Al Naqbi, Eman Elkaleh, and Senabil Al-Hussaini, accompanied by Dr. Eugenie Samier, Associate Professor in Education Faculty, took part in a study trip to Oxford Brookes University in late October. In addition to presenting to faculty, the students co-taught the MA seminar in Educational Management and Leadership covering aspects of diversity and multiculturalism in the field, focussing particularly on Emirati and Islamic principles and practices.
These study trips are indispensable to the overall development of the university graduate students offering them invaluable insights on similar practices abroad, particularly, in a globalizing world where mutual understanding of each other's practices is crucial. The first-hand experience further enhances the students own development in scholarly activities in line with BUiD's reputation as a research based institute.
Dr. Eugenie Samier stated that "Opportunities like this are a valuable part of a doctoral programme, especially in a research university. They have a chance to present their own work in an international setting, have a chance to meet some of the people whose books and articles they are reading, and it helps them develop strong skills. Another aspect of their international work is that they are able to present their research on the UAE - a unique and distinctive culture and society that most people in the West do not know. Our students are those who are building the educational system in the country - international experience like this is important in that part of their work."
Moreover, and in early November of the current year, 2012, five EdD students also led by Dr. Eugenie Samier presented papers at the Commonwealth Conference in Educational Administration and Management in Cyprus - the group representing the UAE in the conference was the largest to attend, outside of UK, US and Australian representation. Abeer Al Rasbi presented early results in her studies of career development in Emirati women's leadership, Aisha Al Naqbi presented her research on using films to teach leadership concepts cross-culturally, Aysha Al Aryani presented on Emirati citizenship and national identity in Dubai international schools, while student Eman El Khaleh presented her research on Islamic ethics in management and leadership, and student Asma Almarzouqi presented on the use of Arabic novels in teaching leadership, and Dr. Eugenie A. Samier represented on inclusive curricular principles of educational management and leadership for the Emirati context.
Eman Elkaleh said "My three presentations at both Oxford and Cyprus were the most fulfilling and inspiring experiences throughout my career. They helped me to build the self-confidence and competences needed to work at an international level. Researchers and scholars in both cities were quite impressed by our work. I was so lucky because a journal editor, who attended my presentation, gave me her business card to consider publishing my paper with them and a high ranked faculty from University of Birmingham was interested in our topics and kindly offered to be our UOB advisor. We did not know how strong our programme is until we met with other students and faculty and found that we are in-line, if not ahead, of them. I am so proud to be a BUiD student and I would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Eugenie who well prepared us for those challenges. I hope we made her proud."
It is worth noting here that BUiD's Doctorate of Education is a unique program designed to meet the needs and interests of professionals working within the educational sector. It aims to inspire excellent research that makes significant contribution to the chosen fields of study, as well as developing research methods, theory analysis argumentation and evaluation skills through the taught modules and the thesis.
