Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM)announced that the construction of SOM Chicago designed Burj Dubai, designed as the world's tallest building, has just surpassed the height of the Sears Tower, which is currently America's tallest building at 1,450 ft. also designed by SOM.

The actual height of the Burj Dubai, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is still a secret but will be above 2,300 ft. and will surpass the current world's tallest building record holder, Taipei 101, in July later this year.

George Efstathiou, Managing Partner for the project in the SOM Chicago office said, "It is difficult to visualize the height of a building this scale. The only way to understand the height is to imagine Sears Tower with the Hancock Center stacked on top of it. It is exciting for SOM to be a part of a monumental architecture project that will exceed all records."

Efstathiou added, "Both Chicago and Dubai have similar beginnings. Chicago rose out of the prairie and Dubai is rising out of the desert. Both cities have architecturally rich backgrounds and their skylines feature tall buildings. Burj Dubai will become synonymous with Dubai as Sears and Hancock have with Chicago."

The Burj Dubai will be the center of a large scale, mixed-use development comprised of residential, commercial, hotel, entertainment, shopping and leisure outlets with open green spaces, water features, pedestrian boulevards, a shopping mall and a tourist-oriented old town. The design of the tower combines historical and cultural influences with cutting-edge technology to achieve a high-performance building. Its massing is manipulated in the vertical dimension to induce maximum vortex shedding and minimize the impact of wind on the tower's movement.

Upon completion, the Burj Dubai will be the tallest building in the world in all four categories recognized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which compiles and ranks the world's tallest buildings. CTBUH ranks buildings on the basis of spire height, the highest occupied floor, roof height and pinnacle height.
