MUSCAT: Improving quality and competitiveness through value stream mapping is an important tool to efficiently design the production process and it's flow. Based on the philosophy of the Toyota Production System (TPS) and lean thinking, value stream mapping acts as an ideal and established method to minimize waste in time and costs in order to improve efficiency of processes.

In cooperation with RWTH Aachen University, the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) will offer a two-day course on Value Stream Mapping on the 18th and the 19th of October.

The short course will give a basic introduction for professionals and executives from production, quality management and planning as well as improvement process leaders in various industry sectors such as chemical, petrochemical, construction, manufacturing, Ministries and services. The course will be conducted in English and will provide a broad range of insights and theoretical background for a successful introduction of Value Stream Mapping.

"Participants learn how to perform a value stream and process analyses, how to identify waste and communication disturbances, how to estimate improvement potentials as well as how to initiate and track efficient improvement measures," said instructor Eng. Sebastian Stiller from RWTH Aachen University. Sebastian Stiller is a Six Sigma Black Belt Instructor and experienced in common quality management methods, especially value stream mapping and design, and process structure matrix. He works as  a consultant in several industry sectors, mainly automotive industry, packaging and machine tools. Stiller will conduct the short-course along with his colleague Eng. Isabel Basse who both have been working research assistants at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. "The application of methods and tools for process optimization discloses manifold potentials for entrepreneurial acting," said Eng. Isabel Basse about Value Stream Mapping. Eng. Basse's main fields of activity cover business process engineering, strategic organisational development of entrepreneurial divisions, ramp-up management and inspection planning. As a Six Sigma Black Belt Instructor and based on her activities as a consultant in several industry sectors she is experienced in common quality management methods with special focus on process mapping, design and optimisation.

The focus of the course will be acquiring methods on how to optimize processes and reduce waste of time and money in addition to improving the understanding and management of processes and product quality by a robust process design.

At the end of the two-day course each participant will receive a certificate of attendance of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering WZL of RWTH Aachen University. The number of participants is limited. Anyone who is interested should register as soon as possible. For bookings, four weeks prior to the course date, participants receive an early bird discount of 5 %. The last day of registration is the 4th of October.  For further details please check out the GUtech website: www.gutech.edu.om or/and contact us via Email: shortcourses@gutech.edu.om or phone: 2461 6621.
