Milestone Confirms SchlumbergerSema Proven Capability to Deliver Large Volume Projects on Time and to Specification
AUSTIN, Texas - SchlumbergerSema, a business unit of Schlumberger Limited (SLB: NYSE), today announced that it has delivered the one millionth FIPS 140-1 Level 2 certified Cyberflex Access 32K smart card to the Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC) program. The SchlumbergerSema card is the first card of its kind to receive this certification by the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST), and fully meets the stringent DoD CAC specifications for Java-based smart cards with cryptographic applications. This milestone marks the successful delivery of one of the largest information technology smart card projects in the world, and is a strong indicator of the continued growth of SchlumbergerSema leadership in the smart card market.
The CAC enables physical identification, logical access for secure logon to secure networks, and secure email and privilege-based access to networks and databases. It will be the principle card used to enable access to buildings and controlled spaces, as well as to gain access to the DoD computer networks and systems.
"We are very pleased that we have been able to match up with the technology roadmap requested by the Department of Defense," stated Paul Beverly, vice president, Smart Cards and eTransactions, SchlumbergerSema, North America. "Continued successful delivery of Cyberflex Access smart cards enabled us to reach the one million mark in mid-2002, confirming that SchlumbergerSema has the ability to deliver large-scale projects to specification, and on time."
Attesting to the importance of this ground-breaking smart card application, the DoD smart ID card implementation has just won two major industry awards: the 'Outstanding Smart Card Application' award at the Cardtech/Securtech conference in New Orleans, Louisiana; and the 'Best Security Implementation' honor in the Advanced Card Awards ceremony held in London, England. At a time when governments around the globe are evaluating secure ID card programs, this dual recognition confirms the key role played by SchlumbergerSema in supporting the growing smart card-based ID card marketplace.
The SchlumbergerSema Cyberflex Access smart card is part of the company's range of highly secure, Java-based smart cards for physical and logical access, e-transactions on-line or through wireless mobile devices, and other applications. Since it developed the first Java-based smart card in 1996, SchlumbergerSema has sold over 100 million of its Java-based smart cards and has just been named world's leading provider of microprocessor smart cards by Gartner Dataquest. Government agencies, mobile communication operators, banks and financial institutions, universities, and many corporations successfully use the company's portfolio of smart card-based solutions all around the world for a large diversity of applications. The SchlumbergerSema smart card-based offering includes cards, readers, terminals, software, servers, application development services and tools, together with consulting, system integration, managed services and a wide variety of other related services.
