New platform delivers benchmark accuracy in hostile drilling environments

HOUSTON - Schlumberger Oilfield Services today announced its new quad-combination formation evaluation service for hostile environments, using the SlimXtreme* slimhole, high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) wireline logging platform. SlimXtreme technology will be shown at the Society of Petroleum Engineers Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition in San Antonio, September 30 - October 2.

Rated to 500F [260C] and 30,000 psi (pounds per square inch), SlimXtreme can log ultradeep wells with borehole diameters as small as 3-7/8 in., and is well suited for drillpipe-conveyed logging in highly deviated and short-radius wells or wells experiencing lost circulation.

On a field test well in South Texas, with temperatures exceeding 489F [254C], SlimXtreme was used to acquire high-resolution data at a borehole pressure of 18,800 psi. Two logs run one week apart using SlimXtreme showed its superior resolution and uncompromised measurement quality. SlimXtreme also has been field tested in the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea and Thailand.

"The SlimXtreme platform is a technological breakthrough for formation evaluation in hostile environments, as the quality of data it delivers matches that of the benchmark Platform Express* wireline logging tool," said Sami Iskander, president, Wireline, Schlumberger Oilfield Services. "This service enables us to offer the same high-quality logging measurements in all types of wells, from the most benign to the most extreme downhole conditions."

This new platform is the latest addition to the growing array of Schlumberger logging services designed for extreme well conditions. These include services for taking reservoir fluid samples and pressures, as well as core samples; borehole seismic and many logging-while-drilling measurements; and associated equipment needed to log deep, HPHT wells such as high-strength cables, adapters and specialized winches.
