Abu Dhabi: The Petroleum Institute Research Centre (PIRC) in collaboration with the Electrical Engineering Department hosted a technical workshop titled: "Electricity Transmission and Distribution activities in the International Electro-technical Commission" on February 3, 2016, at the Petroleum Institute campus. Experts from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the world's leading organization that publishes International standards for all electrical technologies, delivered presentations on the latest developments in the fields of Electrical Power Transmission and Distribution.
The workshop consisted of three technical sessions followed by a panel discussion, where the audience engaged in a debate with workshop organizers and invited speakers. Important topics of primary interest in the electrical energy sector were discussed including integration of large-capacity renewable energy, power systems management, HVDC/HVAC transmission, high-voltage switchgear, power system protection and future vision of electricity transmission and distribution.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Marc Durandeau, Senior Vice President Research & Development, said, "These workshops provide a platform to exchange ideas and learn innovative things. This workshop aimed at imparting knowledge on the latest developments in standardization in the fields of Electrical Power Transmission and Distribution."

Delegates who presented at the workshop were representatives from professional organizations such as CIGRE and IEEE, university professors, consultants, and engineering specialists from major utilities, research organizations and manufacturing companies including EPRI (USA), CRIEPI (Japan), Toshiba Corporation, Tokyo Electric Power Company, Hitachi Ltd, Korea Electric Power Company, Omicron Electronics, EDF France, SIEMENS AG, ABB Power Systems and National Grid UK. Engineers and specialists from ADNOC operating companies and local institutions, The Petroleum Institute faculty and researchers as well as graduate and undergraduate senior students also attended the workshop, which provided a platform to meet and exchange ideas with industry experts and researchers on issues related to electrical power transmission and distribution.
The Petroleum Institute also hosted two technical meetings of the IEC Advisory Committees for Guide 111 revision, February 1-2, 2016, and Electricity Transmission and Distribution (ACTAD), February 4, 2016, for the first time in Abu Dhabi.
A social visit to Manarat Al Saaydiat was organized for the workshop delegates where they experienced the local art, architecture, culture, and leisure projects that are under development on the island. Delegates also visited the 'Emirati Expressions: Conventions of Art' exhibition which featured the work of Emirati artists, where artwork including paintings, photography, furniture design, interactive installations and large-scale sculptures were displayed.
