PepsiCo-Jordan - winner of the 2009 and 2010 King Abdullah II Award for Excellence - signed an agreement with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) at the Ministry's headquarters in Shmeisani. By virtue of the agreement, PepsiCo-Jordan will construct the Wadi Al-Ahmar water dam in Tafileh. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Water and Irrigation H.E. Eng. Maher Abu Al-Samen and PepsiCo East Med and Africa Business Unit General Manager Marwan Istatieh. The signing ceremony was also attended by MWI Secretary General H.E. Eng. Basem Telfah and Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) Secretary General Eng. Saad Abu Hammour.  

 Under the agreement, PepsiCo-Jordan will cover the entire construction costs of the Wadi Al-Ahmar water dam. This project underscores PepsiCo-Jordan's vital role as a leading private sector company and a staunch supporter of the public sector in promoting sustainable community development through the implementation of projects that positively impact Jordan's various sectors, particularly water.   

The Wadi Al-Ahmar water dam project is aimed at collecting rainwater using advanced water harvesting techniques, subsequently achieving local community development in the area and rehabilitating the ecosystems affected by climate change. It also seeks to provide water to livestock breeders and underground aquifers, rehabilitate pastures and wildlife, as well as sustain the area's vegetation cover.

"By funding this project, we endeavor to restore Jordan's water balance and regulate its underground water reserves, in line with the environmental Positive Water Balance Project which PepsiCo-Jordan has adopted. We are well aware of the Kingdom's scarce water resources and we believe that constructing this dam in Tafileh will significantly impact the area in terms of providing much-needed water for irrigation and agriculture, amongst other municipal necessities," commented Istatieh. 

In turn, H.E. Eng. Abu Al-Samen stated, "The Wadi Al-Ahmar water dam project in Tafileh, which is still under construction, corresponds with the action plan of the Water Harvest Department within the Ministry of Water and Irrigation - Jordan Valley Authority. We are pleased to collaborate with as renowned a private sector company as PepsiCo-Jordan on this important project. We would like to thank PepsiCo-Jordan for its continuous efforts in developing the local community and supporting MWI in preserving Jordan's water resources in particular and the environment in general."

Abu Al-Samen explained that this agreement is another important partnership with a private sector organization aimed at supporting and developing the local community. He went on to commend PepsiCo-Jordan's dedicated efforts in constructing the water dam which seeks to restore the Kingdom's water balance and regulate its underground water reserves.
