Muscat: Reinforcing her credentials as an international authority on refractive eye surgery, Muscat Eye Laser Center's Medical Director, Dr Maria Clara Arbelaez, presented a scientific poster at the Annual Symposium and Congress of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) in San Francisco, United States of America in April. As the world's signature meeting on anterior segment surgery, the Annual Symposium and Congress of the ASCRS attracts thousands of eye specialists on the frontline of ophthalmic research and practice from around the globe.
Dr Maria's research, entitled "Cyclotorsion registration before flap cut and after flap lift", received an "Honourable mention" by the ASCRS organisation among 358 scientific posters, 60 of them in the category of Keratorefractive surgery. In her research, Dr. Maria and her team evaluated the intraoperative variation in eye position, the so-called eye cyclotorsion, before flap cut, before flap lift and after flap lift, in eyes that underwent Z-LASIK treatments with advanced static cyclotorsion (SCC) control using the SCHWIND AMARIS 750s and its cutting-edge 6D eye tracking system, and the Ziemer Femtosecond laser.
Dr Maria, found that SCC compensation using the SCHWIND AMARIS 750s with 6D eye tracking system is reproducible and well correlated. The results were statistically significant, showing that the rate of registration was higher (97 per cent) before flap cut, in comparison with before flap lift (77 per cent) and after flap lift (77 per cent), so its measurement before flap cut is recommended.
Now, why is cyclotorsional Eye-Tracking so important in Excimer laser refractive surgery? Because uncompensated cyclotorsional movements induce aberrations which reduce the quality of vision after the surgery. So, the main benefit compared with other systems is that the 6D eye tracking system of the SHIWIND AMARIS 750s is able to detect the exact position of the patient's eye during the entire procedure, taking 1050 measures per second, and whilst doing so, it compensates for every deviation with a typical reaction time of three milliseconds.
