(Dubai, UAE): Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai (Moorfields), the first international branch of the world renowned London eye hospital, has appointed a new specialist consultant to the team based permanently at Moorfields in Dubai, which treats around 11,000 patients from the region, each year. Ms Jana Sheqem, an Arabic speaking Italian national, joins Moorfields as a Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Medical Retina Specialist.

Jana Sheqem's main areas of practice range from Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery to Diabetic Eye Clinics and Cataract Surgery. Ms Sheqem trained in medicine and ophthalmology in Germany, after completing her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree at the University of Jordan, Amman. She then held a series of positions at hospitals and clinics in Italy, and in specialist eye clinics in the UK including the Southampton Eye Unit (Southampton University Hospitals) and Worthing Eye Unit (Worthing Hospital). She has published scientific work and is fluent in Arabic, German, English, Italian, and French.

Commenting on the latest consultant appointment at the hospital, Dr Chris Canning, CEO and Medical Director at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, said: "We are delighted that we continue to attract top consultants from the UK and Europe and we are very pleased with the team of six specialist consultants that we have been able to assemble here in Dubai and the work that the hospital is doing. A key point for us and our patients is that our consultants are based permanently in Dubai - they live and work here in the community - and lead patient treatment programmes, including the post treatment follow up work which is so important for favourable patient outcomes."
