DUBAI – Montenegro marked its National Day at Expo 2020 Dubai on Sunday by celebrating its thriving tourism industry, to attract more visitors and investors from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The festivities also shone a spotlight on the country’s folk music heritage.
The Montenegro delegation, which included His Highness Prince Nikola Petrovic-Njegos, Commissioner General of Montenegro at Expo 2020 Dubai and His Excellency, Jakov Milatovic, Minister for Economic Development, was welcomed by His Excellency Yacoub Yousef Al Hosani, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for International Organisations Affairs.
HE Al Hosani said: “Montenegro’s pavilion offers insight into the country’s multifaith cultural heritage, its natural resources, and diverse ecosystems, celebrating it as an open and safe investment destination, as well as a land of natural abundance for visitors to explore.
“Montenegro is an important partner for the UAE in the Balkans, and we hope to utilise Expo 2020 to build on the partnerships between our two countries in numerous fields of shared interest such as renewable energy, scientific research, agriculture, and education.”
HE Milatovic said: “Even though Montenegro is showcased in one of the smaller pavilions, we have strived, and hopefully succeeded, to tell a great story about ourselves, first, as a tourist destination that has something to offer to everyone, but also as an attractive investment destination that has already been recognised by investors from the UAE, and lastly, we wanted to demonstrate our efforts in making our economic development a sustainable one.
“The opportunity to showcase our country’s values, ambitions, and potential here in Dubai, in the friendly United Arab Emirates, with whom we have carefully and diligently built good relations over the past years, and with whom we cherish the values of peace, tolerance, openness and multiculturalism, is a source of great joy and pride for all of us.”
Performing at Al Wasl Plaza, folklore ensemble Crna Gora (the native, Montenegrin name for the country which literally means ‘Black Mountain’) treated visitors to a dazzling cultural display. The group showcased the nation’s illustrious heritage of folk dance, music and costumes, with a selection of traditional songs.
Located in the Sustainability District, the Montenegro Pavilion showcases the country’s natural wonders, focusing on five key elements: sea, mountains, rivers, lakes and biodiversity. Visitors can also relive the most significant episodes from the country’s rich history and enjoy its world-famous hospitality.
National and Honour Days at Expo 2020 Dubai are moments to celebrate each of Expo 2020’s 200-plus International Participants, shining a light on their culture and achievements and showcasing their pavilions and programming.
Running until 31 March 2022, Expo 2020 has invited visitors from across the planet to join the making of a new world in a six-month celebration of human creativity, innovation, progress and culture.
