Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced a Fibre To The Distribution Point (FTTdp) G.FAST technical field trial in partnership with BT.
G.FAST technology allows existing copper connections to reach speeds comparable to optical connections, with the potential to facilitate Gigabit per second broadband speeds to domestic and commercial customers without causing the major upgrade disruption associated with Fibre-to-the-Premises technology. By maximising the potential capacity of existing copper wire infrastructure, successful deployment of G.FAST technology could accelerate the rollout of ultrafast broadband in the UK.
The G.FAST trial, located close to the BT Adastral Park R&D centre in Ipswich, UK, has seen multi-port G.FAST equipment installed in underground distribution points. G.FAST permits the last leg of an ultrafast network connection to be carried out with copper wire where previously only optical cable was capable of reaching adequate speeds.
Dr Tim Whitley, Managing Director, Research and Innovation remarked: "The G.FAST trial has the potential to demonstrate how ultrafast bandwidth access may be more efficiently delivered to consumers and businesses. We will be observing the results of the trial with interest to see whether G.FAST technology could play a role in ensuring BT has the best network in the short, medium and long term.

G.FAST trial technical detail
Since the launch of world's first G.FAST prototype by Huawei in December 2011, G.FAST technology has become highly anticipated by the ICT industry and has maintained strong development momentum. G.FAST uses time division duplex (TDD) technology and provides flexible upstream and downstream speed ratios. It enables 1 Gbit/s ultrafast bandwidth access per twisted pair within a distance of 100 metres, a tenfold speed increase compared with VDSL2 access. G.FAST is moving existing copper infrastructure to the Gigabit access era.
Using Vectoring technology which offsets crosstalk, G.FAST terminals provide ultrafast access speeds of 1 Gbit/s on average as proven in tests. The impressive speeds come without the need to restructure household cable routings. The G.FAST technology can work at distances of up to 250 metres, and as typical drop cables in the UK are considerably shorter, optimum performance can be achieved. Huawei has played a proactive role in developing G.FAST standards and products. The proposals contributed by Huawei to the ITU-T G.FAST standard organisation cover a wide range of G.FAST core technologies, including point-to-point architecture, TDD mode and basic frame structure, transmission frequency spectrum, forward error correction (FEC) channel coding, line activation negotiation mechanism, multi-line crosstalk offset, online reconfiguration, and a power-saving working mode. ITU is expected to release the exposure draft of the G.FAST standard by the end of 2013.
