Collaboration strengthens support to a strategic industry for the region

Hong Kong September 27, 2006 - Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) announced they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to roll out high quality, leading edge wireless communication testing services at HKSTP's Wireless Communications Test Laboratory. The MOU is intended to further enhance Hong Kong's considerable advantages as a hub for applied research and development in the communications industry.

Wireless communications technologies are expected to play an increasing role in both the Electronics and IT/Telecom industries, two significant drivers of growth in the Pearl River Delta. The Wireless Lab builds on the existing RFIC (Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits) and wireless LAN IC facilities offered by HKSTP, expanding support to the component, module and subsystem levels.

"Along with the basic technologies, wireless communications components, modules and subsystems are literally the building blocks of the sophisticated electronics and IT products that will be in demand worldwide in the coming years," said Ir. S.W. Cheung, Vice President of Business Development and Technology Support, HKSTP. "By providing state-of-the-art test facilities for these technologies, we are confident that this lab will contribute significantly to the development of wireless communications products in Hong Kong, and Hong Kong's value to the region's technology manufacturing industries."

The MOU demonstrates HKSTP's emphasis on collaboration with a range of local and regional partners to deliver the services that the region's industry needs most, according to S.W. Cheung.

"We are very excited about having CUHK to be our collaboration partner. This partnership represents an important milestone in collaboration with industry and university laboratory services. We will continue to work with other relevant organisations to make the most of Hong Kong's scientific talent and technology research services to enhance Hong Kong's added value to attract continued investment, employment and competitiveness," he said.

The Lab offers engineering services and support in 2G, 2.5G and 3GPP pre-compliance tests including RF testing, protocol testing, network simulation testing, IOT testing and MMS/SMS testing. These services and support are available for customers now.

In addition, the Lab also supports testing in the digital video broadcasting such as DVB-T, DMB-T/H and other international standards; and will be further developed to offer test and measurement of Wireless LAN, WIFI and WIMAX technologies by early 2007.

"We are delighted to cooperate with HKSTP, and we strongly believe our jointed effort would greatly enhance Hong Kong's capabilities and competitiveness in wireless technology testing services," said Prof. Peter Yum, Dean of Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
