Dubai: Heriot-Watt University Dubai (HWUD) has partnered with Technogym – a global leader in innovative equipment and digital technologies for fitness, wellness and sport – in an effort to promote a healthy and active lifestyle amongst staff and students. All HWUD staff and students now have free, unlimited access to the MYWELLNESS app, Technogym’s innovative digital platform that helps users achieve their sports, fitness and health goals in a fast, easy and fun way.
With the MYWELLNESS app, Heriot-Watt students and staff can create their own profile to track and improve all physical activities performed at the gym or outdoors. The app guides users step-by-step until they reach their goal with the help of personalised training programmes and video tutorials that demonstrate how to complete exercises. Heriot-Watt students and staff can now access a library of more than 4,000 tutorial videos which include sports-specific workouts, yoga, Pilates, HIIT, strength training, and more. Users can also connect their favourite fitness apps and devices such as Strava, Fitbit and Apple Watch to MYWELLNESS and store all their sporting and lifestyle results within one single app.
David Steers, who spearheaded the new initiative as the Sports Development Manager at Heriot-Watt University Dubai said, “With the onset of COVID-19 and its subsequent impact on our lives, sports and fitness is one such area that has been deeply impacted, especially after several weeks of lockdown and prevailing uncertainties. Movement and exercise are now important more than ever, not only to build our physical health, but also to protect our mental health. As student and staff wellbeing is of utmost priority to us at Heriot-Watt, we found Technogym’s MYWELLNESS app as the most accessible and user-friendly solution that offers the optimum level of resources and flexibility needed to help users meet their fitness goals anytime and anywhere.”
Heriot-Watt University has taken a new approach for sports development amongst students in tune with its Responsive Blended Learning (RBL) model which has been designed and implemented in response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. RBL combines active, supported online learning with context-appropriate on-campus learning opportunities. “While we have resumed all our indoor and outdoor sports activities in line with the guidelines of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and the Dubai Sports Council, and with the most stringent protocols in place, we also want to ensure that students who are unable to participate on campus, especially due to underlying health conditions or travel restrictions, have access to some form of physical activity at home via online resources such as the MYWELLNESS app,” added David Steers.
Sports play a central role in contributing to the student experience at Heriot-Watt. The Dubai campus offers a wealth of opportunities for their students to participate, compete and experience sport alongside their studies, with ten sports clubs actively promoting football, table tennis, cricket, dragon boating and others, and at top-notch sporting venues and facilities across Dubai.
Heriot-Watt’s new health and fitness initiative comes just in time with Dubai Fitness Challenge, the annual citywide movement for residents and visitors, which is currently taking place until November 28.
