DUBAI – The Gabon people’s belief in masks as mediators between the visible and sacred worlds is reflected in the hand-carved wooden masks the country is famous for. The Gabon Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai is showcasing some of these unique masks at an exhibition that opened on 3 February.
Gabon, a country rich in folklore and mythology, uses masks for ceremonial purposes. The exhibition showcases masks used for initiation rites, bereavement occasions, funerals of prominent persons, warding off evil, signaling the birth of twins, and even for protecting the environment.
At a media event organised by Gabon Pavilion, Tatayo, a Gabonese culture expert, speaking remotely from Gabon, shared some insights into Gabonese masks and their significance in the life of the Gabonese people.
He said: “Masks are very important in Central African culture and spiritual life, particularly in Gabon. They serve as a link to their creator, their ancestors and even the environment. There is great depth in them. In fact, one of the main sources of inspiration of modern art came from Africa and Central Africa through these masks.”
The masks in the VIP area of the Gabon Pavilion include the following: the Ngil from the Fang ethnic group; Okuyi from Galwa tribe; Byeri from Fang; Nzambe Kana from Tsogho; and Reliquary Figurine from Kota Mahongwe.
Among the most unique masks at the pavilion is an elongated facial mask by the Fang tribe. These masks are in high demand globally. A media note issued by the Gabon Pavilion says that in 2006, a 19th century Fang tribe mask fetched over USD 7.5 million at auction in Paris (the Drouot auction house), which was a record for such a work of art. The mask, it is said, inspired the artist Pablo Picasso.
