Hoda Abou-Jamra discussed trends in MENA healthcare at Northeastern University in Boston and highlights that 50% of the Dubai-based healthcare PE investor's portfolio was founded by women
UAE, 25 April 2013: Hoda Abou-Jamra, one of the founding partners of private equity firm TVM Capital MENA, has spoken to US audiences about some of the challenges facing the healthcare industry in the US and the Middle East. She also covered some of the latest trends and innovations in the rapidly changing sector.
The ''Women Who Inspire'' event (on April 24th) was designed to celebrate some of the leading female influencers in global healthcare and panelists included Elvira Ponce Leon, U.S. Medical Affairs Director at Novartis; Wendy Warring, Senior VP of Network Development & Strategic Partnerships at Children's Hospital Boston; Nancy Simonian CEO, Syros Pharmaceuticals and Christine Cournoyer CEO, N-of-One, a leader in precision medicine.
Ms Abou-Jamra encouraged emerging markets to examine some of the challenges faced by healthcare providers in the US and learn from the way their model has evolved. When asked about the biggest challenges currently facing TVM Capital MENA as a private equity firm focused on healthcare investments in the Middle East, she identified the rapid evolution of government policies, a complex licensing environment and changing reimbursement policy as the key factors.
Speaking at the event Ms Abou-Jamra said: ''it is an honour to have been asked to participate in today's ''Women Who Inspire'' panel and I think it is vital that we highlight the growing role women are playing in global healthcare delivery as strategists and policy makers.''
She continued: ''At TVM Capital MENA 50% of our portfolio companies were originally founded by women and this is particularly significant in an environment such as the Middle East.''
TVM Capital MENA's existing portfolio includes ProVita International Medical Center in Abu Dhabi, the region's first long-term care facility for ventilated patients, which was founded by Christina Shawky-Boehme. Ms. Boehme founded the first ProVita facility in Germany in1995 and was asked to bring the groundbreaking concept to the UAE in 2010. Manzil Health Care Services (a provider of professional, individualized home care and rehabilitation) was founded by the prominent female Emirati physician Dr. Ghuwaya Al Neyadi in 2011. The firm's other portfolio companies are Cambridge Medical & Rehabilitation Center (long-term care for patients who suffer from chronic illness or disability), and Bourn Hall International, a world-class In Vitro Fertilization brand whose founder invented IVF in 1978.
