An upshot of Bi-Lateral trade relations between UAE & India

Political harmony, economic interests, and understanding have brought the UAE and India together and has contributed in enhancing relations between the two countries over the past few decades. His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding father of the UAE, established the UAE’s foreign policy to emphasise the importance of relations with India. His Highness Sheikh Zayed’s determination was reflected in his historic visit to India in the year 1975, where he met the Indian Prime Minister, the late Indira Gandhi along with other senior statesmen. 

Leadership of both countries realized the significance of the two countries in the field of politics and economy at regional as well as international level. They committed themselves to enhance the relations further. After several mutual visits, the leaders of both the countries exhibited their faith in the importance of common relations.

Relations between both the countries developed during the visits of the visionary ruler of UAE, His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the years 1975, 1983 and 1992. His Highness Sheikh Zayed expressed his views and desires to develop a special relationship with India in an interview given in India. He mentioned the historical ties and mutual cooperation which existed since a long time between both the nations at state and public level. He clearly stated that he wanted to continue the strong mutual cooperation and respect amongst each other. He also stressed special interest on private sectors.

His Highness Sheikh Zayed initiated the measures to abolish and prevent double taxation between two parties and signed an agreement in this regard to further enhance bilateral relations.

In November 2010, the President of the republic of India, Pratiha Patil, made an official visit to UAE, where she met with His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. There she discussed bilateral relations and to enhance it further in the fields of trade, commerce and culture. Continuous growth in trade, commerce, culture and historical friendship were highly appreciated/highlighted during this meeting.

The first historic visit by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in 2015, known to have gained immense importance, consolidated bilateral relations between the two countries in the economic, political, trade and cultural fields.  Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces was the Chief Guest of the Republic Day celebration in India and showed the commitment of both the nation’s to build stronger bilateral relations.

The UAE – India Economic Forum was launched in 2015, marking the 40th anniversary of the historic visit by His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1975. The first edition of UAE – India Economic Forum was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Indian Finance Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, in 2015. The second edition of the event was jointly addressed by H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development, UAE and Hon’ble Mr Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, Government of India in 2016. The 2017 edition is scheduled on the 8th and 9th of November at Habtoor Grand Resort, Dubai, and is supported by Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Abu Dhabi Global Market, and Emirates Industrial City.

Top business and government leaders such as H.E. Juma Mohammed Al Kait (Ministry of Economy), H.E. Fahad Obaid Al Taffaq (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), H.E. Dr. Rashid Alleem (Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority), H.E. Dr. Abdulla Al Karam (Knowledge and Human Development Authority), H.E. Maryam Al Suwaidi (Security and Commodities Authority), K.S Popli (IREDA), Harj Dhaliwal (Hyperloop One), Mohammad Azharuddin (Former Indian Captain), PNC Mennon (Sobha Group) amongst others will be gracing the forum with their presence. The event supported by the UAE Ministry of Economy and is endorsed by UAE International Investors Council, UAE – India Business Council, Indian Chamber of Commerce, IBPC and India Tourism.
