Initiative aimed at reducing road fatalities across the emirates
Dubai, July 15, 2006: In an effort to educate motorists on the dangers of speeding, Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), the Dubai government owned diversified energy group, has tied up with Dubai Police on their awareness campaign, 'Speed Kills'.
As part of the initiative, leaflets and posters on the importance of driving safely are available at select ENOC/EPPCO service stations in Dubai and Sharjah, to highlight the perils of dangerous driving.
Hussain Sultan, ENOC Group Chief Executive and Board Member said: "As the leading fuel provider in UAE, we believe it is only fitting that we play a vital role in Dubai Police's important initiative to promote road safety in the emirates."
Brigadier Eisa Aman Obaid, Acting Director of the General Traffic Department of Dubai Police said: "Speeding kills hundreds of people every year and we are determined to win the battle to save lives. Road accidents are fatal not only to individuals and their families, but also to society and the economy. We are pleased with the encouraging response from the media and our partners and applaud them for their role in increasing public awareness."
"As the responsible Energy Partner of Choice, we hope to instill a sense of caution in drivers and discourage speeding with this campaign, thus saving lives," concluded Sultan.
Recent studies indicate that road accidents in the Middle East are the ninth highest cause of death. According to figures in 2005, Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road are the most dangerous roads in Dubai with 174 accidents on Sheikh Zayed Road, leading to 32 fatalities and 183 injuries, whilst Emirates Road witnessed 91 accidents with 23 fatalities and 74 injuries.
The aim of the campaign is to cut down the increasing number of road accidents resulting from speeding due to rash and impetuous driving.
