Facility Acts As Green Prototype to Twelve FIFA Stadiums that will be Cooled by Sun's Energy
Dubai: 13 December, 2010 - The successful implementation of cutting-edge green solutions to cool the 500-seat showcase football arena at Sports City in Doha, Qatar, was a clear and distinctive factor that set apart the country's bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, said Khaled Bushnaq, CEO of the UAE-based Energy Management Services Int. (EMS).
EMS served as LEED commissioners to the showcase stadium for energy systems which will serve as a prototype to a total of 12 stadiums that will be cooled by the sun's energy. The showcase stadium, completed in August 2010, was inspected by the FIFA committee soon thereafter, as a vital part of the bidding process.
Qatar became the first Arab nation to be named host to the World Cup, even as it overcame bids by the USA, Australia, Japan and South Korea.
Khaled Bushnaq, Chief Executive Officer, EMS, said: "It is a tremendous achievement for Qatar to be chosen as the 2022 host for these very prestigious games. While the event will have ultra-modern sporting infrastructure associated with them, one of the most compelling features that the facilities will employ is solar air-conditioning. EMS is proud to have successfully met our mandate as the facility's official commissioning agents."
As commissioners, EMS executed a systematic and documented process which ensured that the facility was designed, installed, functionally tested, and capable of being operated and maintained to perform in conformity with the design intent.
A main component of the carbon-neutral project was the air conditioning system which runs entirely on solar energy, and other compatible AC equipment such as absorption chillers. Photovoltaic cells were also used to directly convert solar energy to electricity to make it more efficient. The equipment is designed to be monitored and controlled from a central BMS (Building Management system) to ensure proper and efficient operation of the entire system.
The showcase stadium's arena included a natural grass pitch, comfort cooling for spectators, a fully enclosed envelope with a retractable roof, public concourses, facilities for VIP and standard spectators, back of house facilities for players, match officials and facilities management services.
