Pest Control Section, at the Public Health Services Department of Dubai Municipality has recently organized a training programme for private pest control contractors and establishments under the title 'Pest Control Strategies'.
Training course dealt with the comprehensive coverage of essential public health pests in urban and rural environment and the emphasis was given on the management and control strategy.
Essential knowledge on arthropods and vertebrates of public health significance and workshops on biology and strategic management of mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, bed bugs, ants, non-biting midges, fleas, ticks, red back spider and rodents were delivered to the participants by experts at the department.
While commenting on the program, Hisham AbdulRahman Yahya, Head of Pest Control Section at Dubai Municipality said: "As we are aware pest can cause a real threat to the residential and commercial premises which may affect the health of people and damage property. The training was designed with a view to provide with essential knowledge and information on pest management"
"Waste produced by households and commercial sources like hotels, shopping malls, hospitals, restaurants, which contain wet and putrescible materials are potential food sources and harbourages for insects and rodents" he continued.
He said keeping in view of above said aspects, pest control strategy i.e. the concept of Integrated Pest management ( IPM ) has been discussed in greater details in training.
The objective of IPM is to provide an effective and economically efficient approach to pest control, that restricts pest density to a level below economic threshold, he further added.
The training also included specimen demonstration and identification in the PCS Laboratory. There were 104 participants from Dubai and other Emirates.
