DESS, Dubai English Speaking School, recently teamed up with Mountain High and launched a campaign to provide gift boxes for orphanages in Sri Lanka.
The children, aged from 4 to 14, were asked to decorate a shoe box and fill it with small useful items and toys. Together, the children made up 460 boxes! These will be distributed to orphanages in the Southern part of Sri Lanka, courtesy of Sri Lankan Airlines. One of these orphanages is the Kings Charity Trust Revival orphanage to which Julie Amer of Mountain High donated funds in 2005 for the initial building of this facility. The funds were raised from the 4km walk on the Palm Jumeirah which was organized by Mountain High in April 2005.
Julie Amer has been involved in raising funds and awareness for several worthy causes. "This has been a fantastic initiative, encouraging children to help other children. It is a cause close to my heart and I hope that this will be the start of many future campaigns to help less fortunate children across the globe. The children at DESS have taken this on whole heartedly and their enthusiasm is heartwarming". "I would also like to thank Sri Lankan Airlines for their enthusiastic support of this campaign."
David Hammond, Head Teacher of DESS, says "This has been a great project and we are delighted to have been able to give our pupils, at both primary and secondary level, the chance to participate in such a worthy cause. It is important for the children to learn more about the world and different communities, particularly those less fortunate. We hope the children will benefit from the experience and satisfaction of helping others."
Julie will fly to Sri Lanka in the mid December, along with DESS parent Sara Armitage Evans, to oversee the delivery of the boxes. Mountain High is supported by Dodge.
