Parades, Operetta, Traditional Bands, Fashion Shows, Competitions to be held in Modhesh Fun City on Friday

Dubai, August 3, 2004 - The Dubai Summer Surprises office is organising a cornucopia of celebrations to mark the 38th Accession Day of the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, on Friday, August 6, 2004. The celebrations will be spread out across Dubai, in the city's shopping malls and at key DSS sites like Modhesh Fun City, Surprises Island and many other locations.

"Accession Day is one of the dearest occasions in the hearts of all UAE nationals and residents, which is why the DSS office creates a special celebration to mark the occasion every year," said Laila Suhail, Projects Director of DSS. This year, she continued, the celebrations will feature a number of special events including carnivals, entertainment shows, competitions and other activities that tie directly into the UAE's heritage and growth.

DSS Accession Day celebrations will start at 3 pm on Friday at Modhesh Fun City, which will be decorated with portraits of His Highness Sheikh Zayed and the UAE national flag, she added.

A battery of events has been scheduled for Modhesh Fun City, beginning with a special welcome for all visitors. Children attired in traditional Emirati clothing will present gifts of sweets and bukhoor to visitors in the reception area, Suhail said. Further inside the city, there will be traditional fashion shows presented by members of the Modhesh Friends Club, along with an operetta dedicated to Sheikh Zayed and created especially for the occasion presented by Modhesh Friends Club members.

The main stage of the Modhesh Fun City will host both the operetta and the 'Emirates Play,' which recounts the forming of the federation of emirates and how the UAE has developed in the last few decades under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Zayed. The Modhesh Fun City will also host a number of heritage and cultural competitions, including the Modhesh Wheel themed to UAE heritage questions, the Al Yawwaleh and Hala Musical Shows, a Poetry Night and a traditional games competition.

Individual zones within Modhesh Fun City will also celebrate the occasion in their own unique way: the Lets and Go Zone, for example, will feature an Accession Day racing championship; the Zomoruda zone will see a special workshop; the Space Toon will host a musical show; the Modhesh Souvenir Zone will offer special promotions and packages; Accession Day souvenirs sold by Modhesh Friends Club members; and the Sports Zone will host a football championship. All the members of the Modhesh Friends Club, accompanied by cartoon characters and other performers, will also participate in a huge Accession Day parade, bearing UAE flags and pictures of the President Sheikh Zayed.

Visitors to Modhesh Fun City will also be able to share in a huge cake made in the image of the UAE flag. There will also be a fisherman parade, with children accompanying those in traditional diving attire.
